Film still from "Climbing for Life" directed by Junji Sakamoto (Japan, 2025).
On May 16, 1975, Junko Tabei made her way to the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the first woman in history to conquer the world’s highest peak. She founded the Women Climbers Club, whose members joined her in conquering the summits of the other seven highest mountains. The mountain was always her purpose and her goal. However, this great achievement could not prevent adversity: the diagnosis of terminal cancer or other personal struggles, which she always sought to face with passion. She lived for the mountain until the very last of her days. What was the last thing Junko saw beyond the summit?
Based on the true story of Junko Tabei, one of Japan's greatest female mountaineers, the film depicts her heroic life on an epic scale, from the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, to her battle with illness in her later years, and her continued climbing until shortly before her death despite being given a terminal diagnosis. It was released this year, marking the 50th anniversary of her achievement as the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Film will be screened in its original version with subtitles in Spanish.
A film in the 2025 edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona.
