Christmas Concert at the Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes
to
Museu-Monasteri de Pedralbes Baixada del Monestir 9, 08034 Barcelona
During the Baroque period, Christmas inspired numerous instrumental works that combined devotion with the concertante style of the time. In Italy, in particular, this tradition gave rise to concerts explicitly dedicated to the Santissimo Natale, where the sacred theme was expressed through pastoral textures and a serene lyricism.
Antonio Vivaldi’s violin concerto in E major Il riposo, per il Santissimo Natale RV 270 reflects this restrained spirituality, while Giuseppe Torelli’s Concerto grosso op. 8 no. 6 Per il Santissimo Natale exemplifies the formal richness of the Bolognese school. Alessandro Marcello’s oboe concerto in D minor provides a moment of intense melodic expressiveness. The program is completed by two organ concertos by George Frideric Handel, written to be performed during the intermissions of his London oratorios, as spaces of brilliance and contrapuntal invention.
An evening that celebrates Christmas with the richness and emotion of European Baroque music, presented by Vespres d'Arnadí.
