Carla Cook is a bold singer and songwriter who blends the interpretation of jazz standards with her own open and distinctive vision. A Grammy nominee for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and recipient of the AFIM Indie Award for Best Jazz Voice, she has crafted a sophisticated yet earthy voice that reflects the musical richness of her hometown, Detroit, merging jazz, R&B, blues, gospel, Motown, and European classical music.
For over 14 years, she has recorded multiple albums for the MAXJAZZ label, earning critical acclaim for her ability to breathe new life into songs beyond the traditional jazz repertoire. Her style combines audacity, elegance, and musicality, as John Murph of The Washington Post notes: “She has a boldness that enlivens her impeccable diction and a tremendous soul that allows her to strut with visceral delicacy, all backed by sparkling optimism and innocence.” Daniel Okrent in TIME adds: “She’s neither a fresh-faced blonde nor a runaway teenager, so Carla Cook might seem to face a difficult path in today’s jazz landscape. But she knows how to sing—really sing. Cook knows how to cook!”
Cook surrounds herself with exceptional musicians who elevate her artistry: Bruce Barth on piano, Mark Hodgson on double bass, and Stephen Keogh on drums. Together, they create an environment where the singer can fully express her sophistication and range, balancing vocal freedom with the strength and sensitivity of the group.
Her music not only honors jazz tradition but expands it, transforming each piece into an intense, intimate experience where every note and phrase conveys emotion and authenticity.
