Candlemas Fair in La Pobla de Claramunt
Fira de la Candelera a la Pobla de Claramunt
La Pobla de Claramunt 08787 La Pobla de Claramunt
The Fira de la Candelera is a traditional fair celebrated on the Sunday closest to February 2, the day of Candlemas—a Christian feast day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple by Joseph and Mary. La Pobla de Claramunt also pays homage to the town's patron saint, the Mare de Déu de la Llet, at this annual fair that features a craft market of local products, typical fritters and traditional activities. Visitors will receive a bouquet of rosemary, can light candles to express good wishes, burn what is negative about the year and taste the authentic poniol. There will be workshops on the craft production of candles with green beeswax, demonstrations and activities for children. The day also includes a farmers' market, music and cultural spaces, which fill the old town with magic and community.
Candlemass is a deeply rooted celebration in which several religious, solar and rural traditions converge, with references dating back to the 4th century. The Christian religion commemorates the rite of purification, while from a seasonal perspective this date marks a midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. According to a popular saying, "Si la Candelera plora, l'hivern és fora; si la Candelera riu, l'hivern reviu" ("If Candlemas cries, winter ends; if Candlemas laughs, winter returns"). Depending on whether this day is rainy or sunny, the end of winter is predicted to be either imminent or far off.
