Film still from "Cactus Pears," directed by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade (India, UK, Canada, 2025).
Anand, a thirty-year-old gay man who works at a call center in Mumbai, has to spend ten days mourning the death of his father in a harsh rural area of western India. He feels overwhelmed by his sexual orientation, since revealing it to the whole family could distance his mother from her relatives when she needs them most. Anand finds solace in a childhood friend, Balya, whom he accompanies on daily trips to the mountains to graze goats. When the mourning ends and the return to the city approaches, Anand must decide the fate of this relationship born under tense circumstances. With this portrait of queer life in the lowest castes of rural India, director and screenwriter Rohan Parashuram Kanawade offers in his first semi-autobiographical feature a very original story about these two men, who coincide in a common rural context dominated by their elderly families. With impressive performances, splendid photography marked by wide landscapes and small towns, and a natural and sincere narrative that moves away from the most predictable tropes, Cactus Pears is a gem of independent Indian cinema.
Film will be screened in original version with subtitles in Spanish and Catalan.
A film in the 2025 edition of Mostra FIRE!! Film Festival.
