The Peralada Festival welcomes the return of Bryn Terfel, one of the great voices of our time, in a recital that unfolds as a living synthesis of his artistic journey. With a career spanning almost four decades, the Welsh bass-baritone has built an interpretive universe that embraces everything from Mozart to Wagner, from the romantic lied to traditional song, always with the same expressive conviction and profound respect for the music.
Far from a simple sequence of pieces, the program is shaped as a narrative: an exploration, through music, of the cultural and emotional landscapes that have defined his career. The first part, centered on Welsh music, highlights an intimate relationship with language, tradition and memory, featuring songs with popular roots and evocations of a human and emotional landscape. It is a world that Terfel inhabits naturally, not as repertoire, but as lived experience.
This universe engages with other key elements of his artistic journey: Frederick Keel's English ballads, Ivor Novello's musical songs - where theatrical memory blends with a certain nostalgia. In the second part, it extends to the Central European Lied of Schubert and Schumann, as well as the evocative atmosphere of Debussy. Throughout this journey, the voice moves freely between languages and aesthetics, always maintaining the same internal coherence: that of someone who sings from knowledge and an awareness of the text.
On this occasion, Terfel is joined by Hannah Stone on the harp and Annabel Thwaite on the piano, two musicians with whom he shares a long-standing musical rapport. Together, they bring a rich, nuanced and colorful sound to the recital.
Opera also finds its place—with Wolfram's aria from Tannhäuser—not so much as a showcase, but as part of a journey that discovers expressive continuity in each repertoire. A recital that takes the form of a personal and musical synthesis, inviting the audience to embark on a journey that unfolds naturally.
A concert in the 2026 edition of the Festival Castell Peralada.
