For how many years do large ships work? What happens with these steel giants when the end of their service life comes? The exhibition Breaking Ships, Breaking Lives aims to raise awareness about what is considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, the so-called “beaching” or scrapping of ships, which is carried out directly on the beaches.
Scrapping a ship in Europe is expensive due to strict regulations, so many shipowners are looking for cheaper alternative regions. In Southeast Asia there are several places where this activity takes place with lower prices and legal requirements. In this exhibition we will learn about the life of the people who work in these facilities and the harsh working conditions they face day after day. A business for some, and a way of life and an extremely precarious job for many people.
