The pillars of the new European framework for 2030 on energy and the fight against climate change are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 40%. The binding objective at the level of the EU is to achieve at least 27% of renewable energies and more ambitious energy efficiency policies.
In this line, in Catalonia, the National Agreement for Energy Transition establishes maximizing the use of native renewable energy sources to achieve a 100% renewable energy model in the long term, reaching an economy that does not depend on fossil fuels by 2050. Therefore, it is strategic to promote the efficient use of biomass, preserving the multi-functionality of forests and their ecological function.
According to data from the Biomass Boiler Observatory of Catalonia, we know that in the 2012-2015 period there were 2411 installations in Catalonia (181.9 MW of total thermal power). Of the installations, 71% of those installed in the domestic sector; the province of Barcelona has the largest number of facilities, followed by Lleida, Girona and finally Tarragona.
Following the same objectives, the Biogas Hall is added this year with the aim of promoting and disseminating all the initiatives that work for a better management and treatment of livestock manure with the aim of improving environmental management , with a reduction of emission of greenhouse gases such as methane (CH4) and ammoniac (NH3).
Initiatives such as the Biomass Fair of Catalonia and the Saló del Biogàs and Treatments of Purins offer a meeting point between agents throughout the sector and the entire value chain, promoting synergies and collaboration between companies in these new sectors business and generating the growth that the market and the country need to achieve the objectives set.
