This members of British band Big Special seem to be overcome with modesty when asked their name. “It's not big, it's not special,” they explain with a hint of irony. But their music is definitely worth noticing.
Perhaps it's because they're perfectly aware of what their truly invaluable virtue is: turning misery into anthems. That's the specialty of Joe Hicklin and Callum Moloney, a vocal-drum duo that continues to fan the flame of class-conscious punk that has recently been kept alive in the British Isles thanks to Idles, Amyl and the Sniffers and Bob Vylan.
In their case, Hicklin and Moloney approach the genre from a multitude of angles on their self-descriptively titled debut album, Postindustrial Hometown Blues. Their first album sounds exactly what its title suggests, just as Big Special are exactly the band they're meant to be: equally angry and sarcastic, because their reality invites both.
