The concert opens with Three Epigrams (2001) by maestro Benet Casablancas: short, sharp works that reflect the composer’s innovative spirit. These pieces set the stage for a program that explores the dialogue between tradition and experimentation. Casablancas’s forward-looking approach offers a fresh perspective on Variations for Orchestra by Arnold Schönberg, a work that was very much in his mind during the composition of the Epigrams.
Beethoven, too, was a revolutionary in his time. Acclaimed pianist Josep Colom will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, a piece that captures both the force of raw creative power and the quiet subtlety of someone in deep conversation with silence.
The concert concludes with the vivid, symphonic storytelling of Richard Strauss’s Don Juan. Composed in the late 19th century, it reflects that era’s fascination with the rebellious spirit of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Under the baton of Ludovic Morlot, the OBC (Barcelona Symphony Orchestra) will bring Strauss’s dazzling orchestration and dramatic flair to life.
