The Eroica Symphony marked a ‘before and after’ in orchestral music. The critics of the time did not understand that a symphony could last more than half an hour, that instruments could be used in such a forceful way or that expressive themes could be raised to another level (in fact, this would be the inception of ‘Romanticism’). But time has proved him right and it has become one of the most performed works in history.
