Three specialists will discuss the future of coastal cities from a composite perspective on three European cities that are paradigmatic in their historical relationships with the sea.
Barcelona, Amsterdam and Venice are three European cities whose coastal condition has shaped the lives of their citizens and forged age-old close links between land and sea. This relationship, which has kept changing through to the present day, has profoundly influenced all areas of social life, from trade and the economy, to language, art and architecture. All three cities must now deal with the often serious effects of climate change. What can we learn from their history that might help to address the complexity of the present?
Three specialists in the urban history of Amsterdam, Venice and Barcelona will share their views in this analysis of the three coastal cities, and their past and future relationships with the sea.
This is the closing event of Cities and Sea, a series of debates of the Cultural Regatta, a program of activities promoted by the Barcelona City Council on the occasion of the holding of the America’s Cup in the city.
This event will be held in Catalan and English, with simultaneous translation from English to Catalan.
