The pre-history of our festival began with Ella Fitzgerald (alongside Duke Ellington), when the two played a double bill on January 25, 1966, at the Palau de la Música. The success was resounding, and the promoter, Joan Roselló (then owner of the Jamboree), decided to create the Barcelona Jazz Festival that same fall.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of that historic concert, we have commissioned the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra (BJO) to create a concert centered around Fitzgerald’s music, whom BJO director Dani Alonso considers “one of the most important singers in history, and within jazz, the most famous and the one with the longest career, from her beginnings with Chick Webb at the Savoy to her last concert before her retirement at Carnegie Hall in 1991.”
The event is titles The Moment of Truth , inspired by the last album released under Fitzgerald's name, a live performance recorded in 1967 in California. The BJO will also pay tribute to a singer who is part of New Orleans' musical royalty: Tricia Boutté.
