Vier letzte Lieder for soprano and orchestra was Richard Strauss’s final composition – his musical farewell at the age of 82. A sonic testament and the final chapter of post-Romantic vocal literature. Strauss didn’t live to hear the piece performed. Its premiere took place in London in 1950, with Kirsten Flagstad, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Wilhelm Furtwängler.
The departure of a loved one – and the emotional turmoil that follows – has been a recurring theme in music throughout the centuries. It has served as the perfect pretext for some of the greatest composers to write sublime moments in the repertoire.
Three Wagnerian examples illustrate this theme in the work: King Marke’s acceptance of betrayal by his nephew Tristan; the sleeping curse placed upon Brünnhilde as punishment for Wotan’s betrayal of his wife, Fricka; and finally, Isolde’s lament over Tristan’s lifeless body – an eternal death in love, born from the impossibility of consummating it on Earth.
Josep Pons, a specialist in this repertoire, and two incomparable voices — Asmik Grigorian and Matthias Goerne — offer unique opportunity to experience the magic of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss in an evening of exceptional artistry at Liceu. Pons will lead the orchestra on an emotional journey exploring the fragility of the human condition in the face of loss and transcendence.
