Director Mike Leigh’s biopic starring Timothy Spall recounts the latter years of the great, if eccentric, British painter. The film gives an intimate insight into his life as a traveller, anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and frequenter of brothels. Amongst other things, it reflects on the effects of his father’s death, the love of his adoring butler, which he took for granted, and his relationship with the owner of a guest house. The film was nominated at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Best Actor Awards at the Cannes Film Festival. The screening is preceded by a workshop on Romanticism by Ana Novella, from 6-7pm, for which attendees are required to bring a photo of a landscape.
