Anja Lechner, is a classical cellist deeply interested in improvisation. François Couturier, is a French jazz pianist who goes far beyond jazz. Together they are half of the Tarkovsky Quartet and both are regular presences in ECM's exquisite productions. "He moves quite naturally in the room of dreams," said filmmaker Ingmar Bergman of another renowned director, Andrej Tarkovsky, and this phrase can also be applied to the music made by this duo, which is remarkably akin. On their two albums so far, Moderato cantabile and Lontano, they have played music by GI Gurdjieff, Komitas, Anouar Brahem and Frederic Mompou, in addition to Couturier's own works and diverse arrangements that range from Argentine folk to contemporary music. As a duo, they have a unique voice—powerful, sensitive and moving.
