The writer Amitav Ghosh warns of a crisis of collective imagination that prevents us from grasping the true magnitude of the climate crisis and argues for the need for new narratives capable of spurring collective action.
Across literature and cinema as well as history and politics, Ghosh asks whether modern culture is capable of representing climate change and what artistic and political frameworks might help us better understand the scale of this threat so that we can respond to it. One of India’s most important fiction writers, he has reflected on climate change for years and now cautions that a failure of imagination is obscuring the most urgent challenge of our time.
Following the publication of the Spanish translation of The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable (Penguin Books, 2016), Ghosh examines the close links between the climate crisis, capitalism and imperialism and calls for the creation of new stories and narratives that reconnect us with the complexity of the world and our shared responsibility.
