Americana Film Festival 2026
to
Film still from "I Saw the TV Glow," directed by Jane Schoenbrun (USA, 2024).
Started in 2014, by a group of friends who wanted Barcelona audiences to be able to enjoy some of the best independent films from the US, Americana features a diverse range of films directed by established prize-winners and break-out newbies, showcasing some of the best North American cinematic talent. The festival screens feature-length films as well as a collection of independent short films.
This year's retrospective features the Ross Brothers (Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross), creators of Americana classics like Bloody Nose Empty Pockets and Gasoline Rainbow, who will join the festival to present their films. The Ross Brothers’ cinema often breaks the boundaries between fiction and documentary. Captivating filmmaking that has won awards at three flagship festivals: Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW, and has received nominations and presence at the Independent Spirit Awards, Venice, Berlinale, Bafici, HotDocs, the London Film Festival, and many more.
The 2026 program is still being finalized, but check out last year's program below for an idea of what to expect this year.
2025 Program
Last year's guest of honor was Ira Sachs, whose works have been screened at the Cannes, Sundance, Berlin and San Sebastián film festivals and who has become a key director of current indie cinema, uniquely characterized by his sensitivity when dealing with LGBTIQ+ themes. Sachs' films were the subject of a retrospective in collaboration with the Filmoteca de Catalunya, with all his feature films. In addition to hits like Keep the Lights On, Little Men and Love Is Strange, lesser-known films from his filmography such as his debut film The Delta and the Sundance winner Forty Shades of Blue were screened.
Other films on the program included Michael Premo's Homegrown, an intimate documentary that describes the radical turn of the Republican Party and the assault on the Capitol in 2020; Neil Berkeley's Group Therapy shows a group therapy moderated by Neil Patrick Harris with a cast of comedians talking about mental health; National Anthem, Luke Gilford's debut feature-length picture set in the world of the American queer rodeo; Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow, delivers a haunting exploration of alienation and obsession; Familiar Touch, Sarah Friedland's committed and tender account an octogenarian's transition to assisted living; Luis Ortega's El Jockey a Latin American film about identity and redemption is as strange as it is captivating, and so many more!
