Alma del desierto, Mónica Taboada-Tapia (Colombia, Brazil, 2024)
In the arid territories of La Guajira, Georgina, a transgender Wayúu woman in the third act of her life, knows that her time is running out and she wants to change her existence. With nothing to lose, she sets out to reunite with her brothers, who do not speak Spanish and barely survive on the margins of the opaque Colombian bureaucratic system. Between open wounds, memories and unfathomable geographical and emotional distances, Georgina and her people know that enough is enough. Alma del desierto emerges as a story of resilience full of hope that portrays the stoic individual and collective struggle to obtain justice.
“Alma del desierto is a powerful, emotional and endearing documentary that celebrates a pioneer of her community. It is an inspiring and emotional film that has immense sociocultural weight and proves to be one of the most moving explorations of queer identity in recent years.” —Matthew Joseph Jenner, International Cinephile Society.
“A poetic, character-driven road movie about the indomitable Georgina, a transgender woman in her seventies and member of the indigenous Wayúu tribe. An exceptional and moving portrait of identity, resilience and joy.” —Ruth Somalo, Doc New York.
