The Allianz Jean Bouin race is a celebrated Barcelona sporting tradition that brings together runners of all levels for a day of competition and community. Participants can enjoy various race categories in a lively atmosphere filled with sportsmanship and local energy. Traditionally the distance of the Allianz Jean Bouin is 10 kilometers, however in recent years the Open 5K was added as a way to allow runners of all levels to participate without feeling limited by the length of the course.
Founded on February 1, 1920, by a group of journalists passionate about athletics, the Jean Bouin race is the oldest road race in Spain. The race was created by a group of sports journalists who wanted to organize a city race in Barcelona similar to the then-famous Grand Prix Lemmonier held in Paris. It was named after Jean Bouin, a French long-distance runner born in Marseille in 1888, who died in 1914 on the front lines of World War I after having been the Olympic silver medalist in the 5,000 meters at the 1912 Stockholm Games and having broken several world records in the 3,000 and 10,000 meters, as well as the one-hour run.
