Nothing is what it seems in the universe of Alabaster DePlume — and that's part of his undeniable appeal. For starters, that's not his real name: it's Angus Fairbairn. He also never thought of being a jazz musician, and he didn't pick up a saxophone until he was 26.
He's from Manchester, but moved to London to become "a new person" (his own quotes). He puts on a façade of caring little about anything, yet he frequently incorporates sociopolitical and even spiritual commentary into his compositions. And the jazz thing? That's being overly generous: it's just a way of describing his seemingly anarchic but addictive music, ruled by his sax and spoken word. A Blade Because a Blade Is Whole (2025) is the seductive seventh album by this British saxophonist, poet, composer and activist.
