Aja Monet is a Grammy-nominated surrealist blues poet who combines words and presence with hypnotic force. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she won the prestigious Grand Slam Poetry Award from the Nuyorican Poets Cafe at just 19 years old, becoming one of the most powerful voices of her generation. Drawing on a long tradition of poets linked to social movements, her work becomes a tool of resistance, memory and transformation.
Her poems are a force of gravity: they attract, shake and heal. In When the Poems Do What They Do, her debut album, Aja Monet displays a poetic approach that oscillates between denunciation and healing, with constant references to Black resistance, love as a political practice, and joy as a driving force for survival. The songs move between the collective energy of the live show and spiritual introspection, in an experience that is both fire and balm.
