30è Circ d’Hivern: The Great Planting

In this performance for all audiences, different live arts enter into dialogue in relation to circus… and plants. On the thirtieth anniversary of the Circ d’Hivern, youth, experience and wisdom come together.

This year’s show is inspired by pioneer plants: species capable of sprouting, growing and surviving in adverse environments. At the same time, it is a tribute to the origins of the Ateneu—the neighborhood occupation of the site in 1977—and to the history of a cultural initiative that, through community and self-management, has transformed a former asphalt plant into a living seed that, year after year, has continued to bloom in winter.

For thirty winters now, the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris has produced a contemporary circus show known as the Circ d’Hivern. Each year, a director or artistic team is invited to bring together the local circus scene and create a production that then has its own season or, as has happened more than once, goes on to enjoy a long life on stages around the world. The artists in charge of the 30th edition are Escarlata, that is, Bet Miralta and Jordi Aspa. They have chosen a cast including both young performers and more experienced performers, reflecting the evolution of the Circ d’Hivern over these thirty years, as well as a wide range of techniques. Horizontality, verticality and circles dance in La gran plantada alongside the figures of the clown and the acrobat. All based around plant metaphors. Here they plant, fertilize, water and care for the plant world in a performance that invites us not to be swept away by immediacy and consumerism, but instead to plant seeds, learn to care for them together and finally harvest the fruits.

Event will be held in Catalan. For audiences 8 years old and over.
