Independence vote goes ahead
Madrid has said that it will not stand in the way of the 'consultation' on independence which will take place on Sunday. The process has been officially suspended by the Supreme Court. As long as it is coordinated privately and not an official process of the Generalitat it seems that central government will allow it to take place. The unofficial status of the vote, however, weakens it considerably.
Further restrictions on cannabis clubs
As part of a series of restrictions placed on cannabis clubs, the Generalitat health department plans to reduce the number of hours that clubs can open to eight per day. If the proposals go ahead, clubs will also have to close at 10pm on weekday nights and midnight at the weekend.
Construction begins on Marina Vela
The first stone has been placed in the construction of a new marina in the Barceloneta. The marina will be ready by 2016 and will be equipped to accommodate 358 boats.
Prison for group that preyed on tourists
Three people have received prison sentences for their part in a group that stole from tourists in Barcelona. One of the group would stain the victim's clothes with mustard or hair dye, then another would offer to help out. In the confusion the victim would lose their wallet or bag. They have been charged with stealing to the value of 18,000 euros.
Jardins del Baluard to be restored to former glory
Opened in 1954, the Jardins del Baluard, located behind the Maritime Museum is about to have a facelift. Closed since 1993, except for the odd event, there are plans to open the park every weekend in 2015 and to hold cultural events there.
