La Saga Crepúsculo: Eclipse – The third of the hugely successful Twlight series, the teen vampires are back. Bella is in danger in Seattle as a gang of newborn vampires go on the rampage. Based on Stephenie Meyer´s book, this romantic action fantasy will no doubt have 13-year-old girls queuing round the block.
Mujeres De El Cairo (Scheherazade, Tell Me A Story) - Hebba is a feisty talk show host in modern Egypt, married to Karim who is a needy newspaper editor for a government-owned daily. To appease Karim’s bosses, Hebba agrees to soften her critical broadcasts. But by shifting from hard politics to softer women’s stories, she discovers lives and struggles that are even more damaging. Since it’s screening at the Venice Film Festival, the film has received both widespread praise and fierce criticism. Worth a look.
Madres & Hijas (Mother & Child) - Starring Naomi Watts, Annette Bening and Samuel L. Jackson, Mother & Child is a beautifully acted ensemble piece about family life. The plot, based around three separate stories of daughter and motherhood, is clunky in places but it’s a compelling watch. Not to be dismissed as just another chick-flick. La Boda De Mi Familia (Our Family Wedding) – Utterly slated by critics, this Latino/African-American culture-clash comedy ticks off the racial stereotypes and the wedding chaos involves a cake fight and a goat on Viagra. Forest Whitaker plays the groom’s father.
