This Gracia classic has live entertainment every night of the week Lauren Mannion

Passing by in daylight hours, you could perhaps be forgiven for overlooking this tiny, somewhat dingy-looking local without giving it a second glance. But anyone squeezing their way into this Gràcia classic in time for one of Elèctric’s renowned live gigs will see how well the name fits.

Sunday to Thursday: 7pm to 2am; Friday and Saturday; 7pm to 3am

The eclectic decor throws together stainless steel and grungy graffiti with marble floors and the kind of furniture that wouldn’t look out of place in your nan’s living room. It shouldn’t work, but somehow it does. Low-key lighting and unobtrusively cool music complete the effect, making this a perfect early-evening spot to chat and check out the month’s photography or art exhibition. You might even have a hope of grabbing a seat if you show up before the concert crowds. Drinks are well-priced, and even cheaper if you arrive early—try a delicious fruit-laced mojito or caipirinha.

Barring a miracle, by 10pm it’s almost impossible to find a spot at one of the handful of mismatched chairs and tables. But really, with an atmosphere like this, who needs to sit down? An ever-changing schedule lines up events every single night, and with live music, poetry readings, storytelling sessions, stand-up comedy and animated shorts, there’s something for everyone.

In fact, the only things that remain constant are the impressively high standards and pleasingly low prices; performances rarely cost more than a few euros, and many shows are free. The music ranges from jazz, folk and pop-rock to African beats and Brazilian rhythms. Sparks fly as eye-wateringly large numbers of people cram into the ‘intimate’ (perhaps that should read ‘miniscule’) back room for the gigs, but that’s all part of the fun.
