Oh dear lord. Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl (the blonde one from Grey’s Anatomy) star in Killers, a True Lies/007 rip-off about a CIA hitman who tries to hang up his gun and settle in the suburbs. Jen (Heigl) and Spencer (Kutcher) live happily in domestic bliss until the CIA decide they need him back. Cue hordes of gunmen rampaging through the house and a lot of action cliches. It’s all harmless fun but critics have scorned the weak plot and bad direction.
Phillip Morris ¡Te Quiero! (I love you Philip Morris) is based on a true story and it’s a fine vehicle for Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey who star. Carrey plays Steven Russell, a conman married to a cop who comes out as a gay man and finds the love of his life in jail. Philip Morris (McGregor) is the object of his affection, a shy man who is charmed by Russell’s lies. The film, essentially as The Independent points out “a gay prison escape movie”, is a quirky, off-beat comedy that has won the hearts of many. Go see.
Los Mercenarios (The Expendables) was co-written, directed and stars Sylvester Stallone and also features Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. The plot revolves around a baddie ex-CIA agent and a group of mercenaries in South America. Mickey Rourke and Dolph Lundgren also show up. Do you need to know more?
