The Urban Fabric
The idea for Urban Fabric came to Liz Kueneke in 2008 as a project for people to come and hand-sew significant places onto a hand-embroidered map of their city. Five cities took part, Barcelona, New York, Bangalore, Fez and Quito, with 1,500 participants coming to embroider places corresponding to questions such as, "Where is the heart of the city?", "Where is a place that is positive for the community?", "Where is a place which needs changes?", "Where is an unsafe place?" allowing for both positive and negative responses.
After two years of travelling and undoubtedly a lot of sewing, the cloth maps are now finished and are the subject of this exhibition which opens in Barcelona. Taking place around the world, this is the only showing of the work where maps from all of the countries will be displayed together in Europe.
Entrance is free.
