The Barcelona Kathak Project
If you’ve never seen a kathak performance in Barcelona, it’s probably because the dance—originating in northern India—has never before graced Spanish stages in a professional sense. That is, until now. The Barcelona Kathak Project has been given professional training and treatment by internationally famous master Fasih Ur-Rehman. Celebrating its first year, the show will be performed by local dancers and artists and accompanied by professional tabla player Sajid Ali.
Admist the swirl of vibrant costumes, kathak seems to combine certain graceful elements of ballet with the quick rhythmic beating and fluttering of feet, which become instruments in themselves.
The performance program hosts four different movements, and will highlight the ways that kathak is connected to mathematics and geometry, to percussion instruments of northern India (such as the pakhawaj and the tabla), and to the lyricism of a 'taraana' (which comes from the Persian word for ‘song’). The final performance will be an original kathak dance performed by Fasih Ur-Rehmann.
The event has been organised by Casa Asia and Núpura, in collaboration with Bollywood Sitare and Bollywood Varali. Tickets range from €15-12 for adults, €11-8 for children (under 12).
