Tarragona Sant Magí
Sant Magí is one of two patron saints of Tarragona and the five days that are celebrated in his name are packed with activities, from local traditions to big name acts.
This year there will be over 170 performances in venues throughout the city, including Manel, Julio Iglesias and the Moscow Ballet. The festes have a strong water component which is just as well, since they all take place mid-August.
The main procession (pictured) accompanies a large cart that carries a barrel filled with water from the spring of Sant Magí de Brufaganya (about 50 kilometres from Tarragona), said to have been blessed by the saint. Not to be missed is the Revetlla Remullada, when everyone crowds into the main square, many wearing swimming gear, and have water thrown on them as music pumps out and strobe lights and laser beams light up the square. Another refreshing, but more sober, event is the Sindriada, an evening of music and—as the name suggests—cuts of watermelon.
