The American singer-songwriter comes to BARTS with his latest work, the acclaimed Dream River.
Bill Callahan began as a highly experimental artist with his songs being mostly instrumental, in stark contrast to his later work, which is more lyrics focused; when he signed with Drag City, he started to use recording studios and a wider variety of instruments. From 1993 to 2000, Callahan's music became much more professional sounding, with more instruments and a higher quality. After the release of Dongs of Savotion (2000), he began moving back to simpler instrumentation and recording style, while retaining the consistent songwriting style he'd developed over the years. Many critics have characterised his music as depressing and intensely introverted with one critic describing his work as "a peep-show view into an insular world of alienation."
