Although Irish in orgin, the slam poetry movement gained momentum in the US bar scene throughout the Eighties and is now popular worldwide. On June 18th, performers will take the stage of Harlem Jazz Club to recite their original work and will be judged by a jury of randomly selected members of the public. The poets are not only judged on their content, but the way in which they deliver the words.
This poetry slam is open to all and offers a great opportunity to test one's skills against all comers. The contest consists of an opening round which will separate the good from the better while a second round will crown a winner. The 18th, however, is just one of the first installments of the long-running competition, and the grand final will be held in collaboration with Kosmopolis 2011. To enter, simply send two original texts to the organisers (Slam@hipnotikfestival.com).
