Born in India, but educated in Paris, dancer and choreographer Shantala Shivalingappa successfully combines East and West styles in her work. Inspired at an early age by the Indian maestro Vempati Chinna Satyam, early on Shivalingappa focused on the southern Indian classical dance form kuchipudi. From her teens, the already-accomplished dancer began to work with some of the most important figures in modern culture, including Peter Brook, Pina Bausch and Maurice Béjart.
Two dances in the Namasya project are based on collaborations that Shivalingappa did with renowned choreographers Pina Bausch and Ushio Amagatsu; the other two are a piece by Savitry Nair and one by Shivalingappa herself.
