The Duke of Wellington famously announced when confronted with his Irish heritage, that being born in a stable did not make him a horse. Similarly, but perhaps with less negative and prejudicial connotations, Latifa Echakhch plays with her audience's notions of nationality, turning them on their head and subverting them. By taking cultural identifiers out of their natural context, she forces her public to reconsider their own background and preconceptions.
