Based in Tyrol in 1805, the comic opera La fille du régiment (The daughter of the regiment) by Gaetano Donizetti with libretto by Jean-François-Alfred Bayard and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges was first performed at Paris's Opéra Comique in 1840. At the time, it didn't go down well amongst French musicians, jealous of the growing fame of the Italian Donizetti. However, times change, and this new production by the Liceu is based on a previous staging produced by NYC'S Metropolitan Opera House, the Covent Garden Royal Opera House and the Staatsoper of Vienna—with some of the biggest organisations in modern-day opera supporting it, how can La fille not find acclaim?
