Barcelona once again welcomes the Three Wise Men from the east, bearing gifts for all the good children and celebrating their special day with a procession through the city streets.

As usual, the three kings will arrive by boat at Moll de la Fusta at 5pm, where they'll . be greeted by mayor Xavier Trias. From there, they'll head to Parc de la Ciutadella from where the main parade will begin at 6.30pm.

Apart from the kings themselves, the procession, which is almost a kilometre long, includes the star of Bethlehem, the Royal Post, which collects children’s letters for the kings, as well as dummies from babies who are ready to give them up. The end of the parade is taken up by a carriage of coal, which is given to those children who have been naughty during the past 12 months.

  • Re: dummies

'Dummy' is the British English word for 'pacifier' - see Wikipedia for clarification if necessary. Thanks.

I'm sorry Hannah, but despite your answer I remain very puzzled by your use of the word "dummy". I'm at a loss because it doesn't fit what dictionaries say. Since when is a dummy a pacifier?

  • Re: Kings' Day

With regards to the query about dummies, it's a system used by parents to stop their children using a dummy (pacifier). The dummy is given away to the Kings, and the idea is that the child isn't upset by this method of removal because of all the positive associations with the Three Kings (the parade, gifts, etc.).

Please clarify what is meant by "dummies from babies who are ready to give them up". Thank you, and all the best for 2012!
