Jacques Leonard - Pèlerinage Gitan
Jacques Leonard, described by many as one of the best humanist photographers, travelled to Saintes Maries de la Mer (La Camarga, Francia) every year between 1960 to 1970, this exhibition shows some the images he captured there.
Between May 23rd to the 25th gypies travel in pilgramage to the French town to celebrate their patron saint Sara la Negra. The saint, although not officially canonised by the Catholic church plays a significant role in the gypsy ceremonial calendar with many people travelling to Saintes Maries de la Mer, the site of her death, every year. She is thought to have been the servant of the three Marys - Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome and Mary Jacob, where the town gets its name from.
