Each November, the Fundación Setba uncovers the history of one of Plaça Reial’s many renowned establishments, giving us an insight into the people and hidden histories of Barcelona’s most lively square. This year, the exhibition focuses on the Hotel DO, which is located in the corner of the square connected with Carrer Colón. It was in front of this building that the famous shoe-shining magician, Fructuós Canonge, also known as the Spanish Merlin, started his career before becoming famous all over Europe. Inside this hotel is one of the main objects of the exhibition, Canonge’s shoe-shining chair. Alongside the chair, the exhibition also contains his shoe-shining box, images from the period, maps and photos of great historical importance. These exhibitions really help to remind us of what the now tourist-filled Plaça Reial was like in times gone by.
