Festival Asia 2012One of the many dance performances you can see at the Festival Asia
Barcelona will be buzzing with different activities during the festivities for its patron saint La Mercè, and Casa Asia is offering the chance to celebrate the festa major in a way that’s a little bit different.
Festival Asia, now in its 11th year, is a completely free festival organised by the cultural centre Casa Asia with the aim of celebrating Asian culture whilst introducing the continent’s diversity and cultural practices to the people of Catalunya. The festival includes a host of music, theatre and dance alongside various seminars and workshops offering the chance to try your hand at activities such as martial arts and Japanese calligraphy.
This is a major annual initiative that hopes to create an intercultural dialogue between Asia and Spain and offer the chance to encounter some of the fascinating and diverse cultural practices from countries such as China, Japan, Bangladesh and Korea. The family friendly fiesta provides activities for people of every age in venues across Barcelona, including Parc de la Ciutadella and the Mercat de les Flors. When the festivities reach their height on the official day of La Mercè (24th), you can soak up the atmosphere of 'A Day in Asia' and witness Bangladeshi and Indonesian dance alongside Chinese folk-rock group Hao Yun.
Being the only Asian cultural festival held regularly in Europe, and with attendance growing every year, this is certainly worth fitting into your probably packed La Mercè schedule, and popping by for an hour or two to try some Asian tapas and listen to one of the many musical performances. It promises to be well worth it.
