This year marks the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between Spain and China. The underlying aim of this exhibition is to further strengthen the countries' exchange and mutual understanding, by bringing the famous Chinese artist He Jiaying to the Catalan capital - the painter will visit Barcelona to inaugurate the exhibition.
Born in 1957 in Tianjin, He Jiaying is a member of the People's Political Consultative Conference and Body Painting Institute of Tianjin, and is Vice President of the Association of Chinese Artists. He has won many awards in countries such as Korea, India and Japan, which has greatly supported his career and made his name highly valued in international auctions. Furthermore, Jiaying is a representative of the growing movement in contemporary Chinese art; he is extremely concerned by the revaluation of traditional Chinese painting and its transmission to new generations.
His work, specialising in miniature and minimalism, conveys a profound oriental charm and is a bridge between contemporary techniques and a respect for traditional aesthetics. The artist aims to show how Chinese contemporary art can contribute to the world without sacrificing its origins as an ancient history.
The retrospective exhibition presented in the MEAM is a unique opportunity for the West to approach the work of a master in Chinese painting. The first floor of the museum will house more than 60 works, some in large format, and tour all periods of his career, from 1980 until today. This initiative is the first step of what is to be a fruitful collaboration between the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes , based on the MEAM , and the latest representatives of figurative paintings in China.
