Way back in 2005 it looked like Brazilian band CSS (an initialism of Cansei de Ser Sexy) were on their way to dizzying heights of fame, having conquered art-rock scenes with songs such as Art Bitch, Let's Make Love and Listen to Death from Above and the brilliantly titled Alala.
They sound just like Le Tigre! everyone thought and back then, it was great. Yet as with many bands whose first releases do them so well, the next didn't quite live up to the hype, and poor CSS were practically forgotten.
But now they're back, albeit a man down. Their only male member, Adriano Cintra quit last year citing artistic differences, shady managers, money-swindling and a sheer dislike for his fellow bandmates as just some of the reasons. Their new release, Planta, has been met with mixed reviews leaving no doubt that the loss of Cintra has created huge problems for the band. Yet whether or not you like the new release, the whole evening is sure to be a blast from the past for those of us who spent our teenage years screaming "alala" with our headphones in.
