Although best known as a bass guitarist, American Marcus Miller is also a jazz composer, a producer and a multi-instrumentalist. The 56-year-old is classically trained as a clarinetist, and also plays the keyboard, the saxophone and the guitar. As part of a European tour taking him to destinations such as Madrid, Rome and Milan, Miller will be performing hits from his 2015 album Afrodeezia, which combines jazz with African sounds. The record features a number of music styles, including elegantly orchestrated gospel songs, dark and guttural R&B and a chanson-like episode mingling classical cello and electric bass. The Brooklyn-based musician has worked with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton and Jay Z, and he brings his twanging turns, chiming sounds and thumping low accents to BARTS on April 13th.
