As homage to Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz, more widely known as Compay Segundo, the group that this Cuban musician used to play with come to BARTS for an evening of Caribbean vibes and Latin American sounds. Compay Segundo is most famous for composing the Grammy award-winning opening track of the 1997 album, Buena Vista Social Club, entitled ‘Chan Chan’. Compay Segundo’s musical career brought him to perform in front of numerous esteemed figures, including Fidel Castro and Pope John Paul II. After the success of ‘Chan Chan’, Segundo continued performing with his band, Compay Segundo y sus Muchachos, right up until his death in 2003.
The band continues to perform all over the world, and their new name, Grupo Compay Segundo, indicates how influential Segundo still is over the band’s vision and soul. Segundo’s son, Salvador Repilado, now leads the group.
