Barcelona comes to life at the end of this month as the city’s streets and plazas are filled with festivities in celebration of the city’s patron saint La Mercè (Our Lady of Mercy). The legend goes that La Mercè protected the city from a plague of locusts in 1687, and an annual festival has been held in her honour ever since. With over 600 cultural activities on offer, get set for an exciting programme of performances, parades, circus acts, museum open days, gegants, dragons and the famous correfoc (fire run), as people come together for the city-wide festa major.
The festival offers more than just traditional activities, however. Barcelona Acció Musical (BAM) is a music festival hosting free outdoor concerts around the city from September 22nd- 25th. With over 40 artists performing in various locations around the city, BAM brings together local and international talent.
To end the festivities with a bang, thousands will gather in Plaça Espanya to witness one of the city’s most spectacular firework shows.
