This is one of Catalunya’s most famous Rhythm and Blues festivals, which has taken place annually for 25 years. Not just limited to conventional R&B, the festival celebrates an eclectic mix of music, from soul to world music, with emphasis on traditional Afro-American sounds. The festival has boasted some legendary artists performing over the years, including Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Albert King and Elvin Bishop. Most of the concerts take place at Teatre Principal, but The Fairfield Four concert will be held at Teatre Zorrilla.
Various artists perform throughout April:
Aziza Brahim: Having performed her folk and world music in Barcelona since the mid-Nineties, this Sahrawi singer was born in an Algerian refugee camp, and her compelling voice represents hope in the face of adversity. April 8th.
The Fairfield Four: This American gospel group has been performing for over 94 years and won numerous awards, most notably Grammy awards in 1998 for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album, in 1997 for Best Traditional Gospel Recording and in 2002 for Album of the Year. April 9th at Teatre Zorrilla (Please note: This event is at Teatre Zorrilla, not Teatre Principal).
Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott: Both Heaton and Abbott are former members of the British pop-rock group, The Beautiful South. Since 2004, the two singers have collaborated to produce music that encapsulates charm, irony and social criticism in their lyrics, accompanied by soulful voices and beautiful instrumentals. April 21st.
Martin Carthy: Bob Dylan and Paul Simon both cite him as a great influence on their own music, and this British folk singer’s unique percussive picking style places him amongst the great internationally-acclaimed singer-guitarists. April 17th.
