Death altars are set up in Mexico to remember the dead and provide a creative outlet for honouring the memory of those who have passed away. A flower-lined pathway leads to a banquet table, music is played, guests eat and drink as they would at any other kind of party, and the celebration is a happy one.

This exhibition features an 'altar de morts' created by the artist Marisa Pecanins, and there will also be presentations by different experts related to death rituals (in Catalan). This event is part of a wider 'Ruta de Altares en Barcelona 2009', which will feature altars set up in different venues around the city from October 26th to November 8th. The places that you can see altars include the Casa Amèrica Catalunya (www.america.net), the Museu Etnològic (www.museuetnologic.bcn.es) and the centro Cívico Sagrada Familia (www.ccsagradafamilia.net). The shop Fantastik will have an altar dedicated to Michael Jackson (www.fantastik.es) and the Hotel Casanova one dedicated to the artist Frida Kahlo (www.casanovabcnhotel.com).
