In the 19th-century, Bernardino Montañés, a painter from Zaragoza, set about to explore Pompeii and discover the splendid Roman towns buried by the violent eruption of Vesuvius.

In the 70-odd paintings on show here, which he later presented to his mentor Federico Madrazo, Montanes captures the archaeological and artistic remains of Pompeii through the careful use of his watercolours.

The paints will be exhibited in chronological order and are accompanied by explanations to explore the deeper meaning of Montanes's paintings, which now serve as a tool for analysing the famous Pompeii ruins.
