According to a report commissioned by the Centro de Invesitgación de Epidemiologia Ambiental (CREAL) the high level of contaminated particles in the air in the 57 municipal areas of the Barcelona area provoke 3,500 deaths each year (article in Castilian, El Mundo). Besides the reduction in the number of deaths and increased life expectancy there would be 5,100 fewer cases of chronic bronchitis in adults and 31,100 fewer cases of acute bronchitis in children and 54,000 fewer asthma attacks in both children and adults. In 2008, Greenpeace released a study, Pollution in Spain that assessed that Catalunya was one of the most polluted regions with 19 black spots which include poor processing of municipal waste, the dumping of toxic materials and industrial pollution for oil extraction and refining.
The first portrait by Salvador Dalí of Gala his wife and long-time muse has been bought by the Fundació Dalí from a private owner at an auction in Sotheby's for $540,000 (article in Castilian, El Periodico).The painting is just 13.9 by 9.2 centimetres and pictures the artist's face alongside his lovers. Antoni Pitxot, the museum director describes how the painting is "reminiscent of modernism and made with thick brush strokes". He goes on to say that the portrait shows the precise moment when Gala, then wife of the poet Paul Éluard ceased being his muse and became that of Dalí.
