The battle against the tiger mosquito continues this season and Castelldefels, one of the municipalities of Baix Llobregat which has seen some of the highest number of complaints has resorted to pouring an artificial hormone into sewers, water sources and places where the mosquitos like to breed in order to fight the pest (article in Castilian, El Periodico). The municipality has identified around 1900 points which could become breeding grounds. Roan Morera, a member of the Salud y Consumo de Castelldefels says that after the first round of spraying the substance in June there have been fewer complaints. However Luis González from the association of Bellamar residents has said that it is too little too late. "We welcome the actions with larvicides but it has arrived too late, because we have had mosquito's since March."

In the last three days the city has recorded a record number of cruise ship passengers in the city, some 53,000 people came off 17 ships which passed through the port (article in Castilian, El Pais). Sunday saw the biggest number of ships and passengers with more than 25,000 recorded in the city. 70 percent of the ships have their starting and end destinations in the city. Sources at the port have released figures that suggest a growth in rates in months previously considered off-season such as May and October. Barcelona is now recognised as the fifth world cruise ship port and a business that makes around €200 million annually.
According to the director of the Grec Festival, Ricardo Szwarc, a total of 84,841 spectators attended the festival this year (article in Castilian, La Vanguardia). The most watched show was Oedipus, a trilogy by Daniel Loayza, translated by Eduardo Mendoza. Nineteen shows were sold out including jazz legend Keith Jarrett and Sing the Truth, which featured the music of Nina Simone.
Also in the news: The start of August has seen the beginning some major distruptions to the travel of many citizens. From today until August 16th the RENFE station at Plaça Catalunya and Arc de Triomf both out of service, service will be renewed but not fully between the 16th to the 23rd. Plus on three metro lines 2,5 and 11 will see service interruptions.
