Today is the day that Catalunya celebrates its patron saint, Jordi, and the streets of all towns and cities are filled with stalls selling roses of all colours and styles and books (article in Castilian). Tradition dictates that men present their loved one with a rose and woman return the favour with a book. However, it is also typical for male bosses to present female colleagures with a rose and for sons and grandsons to give a flower to mothers and grandmothers. This is the most important day of the Catalan book retail industry by a long way - it's predicted that some €20 million could be spent on books today.
The Catalan airline company Vueling has managed to reduce its losses by 72 percent in the first quarter of this year (article in Catalan). Although it still had losses of over €6 million, this was significantly less than for the same period last year, when it registered losses of more than €22 million. The airline said that it predicted a notable improvement for the second quarter of 2009.
Following Madrid's last-minute triumph in their match against Getafe on Tuesday evening, which brought them to within three points of Barça, some fans were nervous about how their team would react in their own match against Seville at the Camp Nou last night (article in Castilian). However, they had nothing to worry about. By the third minute of the first half, FC Barcelona had taken the lead with an incredible goal from Andrès Iniesta and, apart from a few close chances for the Andalucian side, the Catalan team continued to dominate for the rest of the game. Eto'o, Xavi and Henry all scored, bringing the final score to 4-0. With a series of difficult and close-together matches coming up in the next fortnight (including away at both Valencia and Real Madrid, the final of the Copa del Rey and two legs of the Champion League semi-finals), Barça would not be amiss to go into this final stage of the 2008-09 season quietly confident.
